Adult Literacy Programs
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a program of instruction designed for adults who lack competence in reading, writing, speaking, problem-solving, or computation at a level necessary to function in society, on a job or in the family.
Students under the age of 18 must complete a Minor Release Form Packet. This packet consists of a Minor Release Form and a Disciplinary Form that must be signed by the student, parent/guardian (signature must be notarized) and by the last school attended.

Adult High School (AHS)
Adult High School program consists of core courses required by the public school system along with electives offered by the community college. The number of units (20-28) varies depending upon the specific agreement between a particular community college and the local public school system.
The program is a comprehensive distance learning program that emphasizes individualized instruction and self-paced lessons. A work experience component may be offered. Passing the North Carolina Competency Tests (Reading/Math) is a requirement for graduation.
An Adult High School diploma is issued locally by the community college. There is no cost to the student for courses. The college may charge a graduation or student activities fee. To receive a copy of a diploma or transcript, the student must contact the community college where the diploma was awarded.

General Educational Development (GED)
The GED testing program is offered by all 58 community colleges in North Carolina. Cost to students is $7.50. Upon attaining minimum standard scores of 410 on each of the 5 tests and a total score of 2250, a high school diploma equivalency is awarded to the student by the State Board of the Community College System. The GED test consists of five tests (Language Arts Writing, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts Reading, and Mathematics).

Compensatory Education (CED)
Compensatory Education is a community college program designed specifically for adults with mental retardation. The purpose of the program is to compensate adults with developmental disabilities for the lack of, or inadequate, education received earlier. The focus of the Compensatory Education Program is on helping the individual become as independent as possible through acquiring basic and life skills needed to function successfully in daily living.
Eligibility criteria: To be eligible to participate in the Compensatory Education Program, an individual must be 17 or older, and (a) diagnosed with mental retardation or (b) functioning on a level equivalent to mental retardation resulting from head injury or brain damage.
