Plumbing:  Installation & Troubleshooting

This is a 96 hour introductory course designed to prepare the student for an occupation in the plumbing trade.  This course includes the study of the following subjects:  HRD, Plumbing Theory, including:  hydraulic gradient, types of plumbing, understanding venting, types of pipe and fittings used in plumbing, tools used  in various phases of plumbing, methods of joining pipe.  Plumbing Installation, including:  when a plumbing license is needed, using proper PPE, methods of pipe cutting, working with various types of plastic piping, working with copper pipe/tubing.  Plumbing Repair and Maintenance, including:  proper soldering techniques, drain machine operation and safety, repairing faucets and commodes.  Plumbing Diagrams and Prints, including:  understanding symbols, reading dimensions and understanding drawing schedules, working with isometric drawings, working with rough sketches, use of plumbing blueprints in conjunction with other types of prints and OSHA safety in the field of plumbing.

Occupation Description

A plumbing helper would be expected to handle the following repairs:

  1. Repair and installation of residential and commercial plumbing lines
  2. Plumbing system troubleshooting using various plumbing equipment
  3. Perform routine preventative maintenance of plumbing equipment and lines
  4. Repair and maintenance of both residential and commercial equipment and lines

Careers Available

Plumbing helpers are employed by plumbing contractors, plumbing repair facilities, hospitals, apartment complexes and other maintenance companies.

Entry-Level Salary

Entry-level salary range – $24,000 to 30,000 per year

Learning Objectives

Through classroom lecture and hands on lab work the student will learn the safe and practical applications of plumbing repair and service.  Training sessions are held in a tech skills lab.  The lab is equipped with the necessary tools to teach this course.  The lab is supplied with plumbing components to allow students to run piping and do rough in type installations.

There are no prerequisites, but a strong mechanical ability is very important.
