Career Description
Medical assistants are the only allied health professionals specifically trained to work in ambulatory settings, such as physician's offices, clinics and group practices. These multi skilled personnel can perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures.
Careers Available
Careers are available in physicians' health practitioners, such as chiropractors and podiatrists, outpatient care centers, public and private educational services, other ambulatory health care services, State and local government agencies, medical and diagnostic laboratories, nursing care facilities, and employment services.
Entry-Level Salary
- $10-13/ hour.
Course of Study
Course work includes instruction in administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures including scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance, accounts, billing, collections, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.
Graduates of CAAHEP-accredited medical assisting programs may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants' Certification Examination to become Certified Medical Assistants.
Recommended Courses and Skills
Strong oral and written communication skills. High School Biology and/or human anatomy and physiology recommended. Ability to pass national certification exam.
