Career Description
Graduates will be prepared for employment in the field of applied horticulture. The primary emphasis of the program is on institutional gardening which includes public parks, public gardens, historic properties, and private estates. A secondary emphasis is on residential and commercial landscape installation and maintenance.
Careers Available
Specialist/supervisor in public parks and gardens, estate gardener, specialist/supervisor in historic gardens, public or private garden designer, specialist/supervisor in landscape installation and management companies.
Course of Study
The Landscape Gardening curriculum emphasizes intensive, practical, hands-on training in applied horticulture to reinforce classroom lectures on theory and technique.
Course work includes plant propagation, greenhouse and nursery plant culture, turf management, plant identification, arboriculture, diseases and pests of plants, and landscape planning, maintenance, and construction.
Graduates will be prepared to take the North Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s Examination and the North Carolina Certified Plant Professional Examination.
Helpful Personal Attributes
An interest in plants, their care and use, good communication skills, a willingness to do manual labor, a willingness to learn to operate mechanical equipment.
