Career Description
Viticulture is grape growing. It is a very specialized form of agriculture and involves the practical application of scientific principles to growing a successful crop. Enology is wine making. Professionals in this field turn grapes into wine using modern technology to complete an age-old process.
Careers Available
The Viticulture & Enology curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for various careers in the grape-growing and wine-making industry. These jobs include vineyard supervisor/owner, grape co-operative manager, winery supervisor/owner, and retail sales associate.
Course of Study
Classroom instruction, laboratory and field applications of viticulture/enological principles and practices are included in the program of study. Course work includes Vineyard Operations, Winery Operations, Grapevine Pests and Diseases, Wine Production and Analysis, and Small Business Management. Graduates will also be prepared to take the North Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s Examination and the North Carolina Certified Plant Professional Examination.
Helpful Personal Attributes
An interest in plants, their care and use, good communication skills, willingness to do manual labor and a willingness to learn to operate mechanical equipment.
