Applying for IRB Approval of Research
All institutions applying for federal funds must have Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) with clearly defined policies and procedures to ensure that grant-funded research activities protect human subjects. Principal investigators submitting proposals involving research and human subjects must complete required forms and submit the project for IRB review prior to submission.
Researchers
should determine what type of IRB approval they will be seeking: exempt,
expedited, or full review (for the criteria for each category, see exemption
). Researchers should then complete the
application
and
submit one copy to the Institutional Review Board, Office of Institutional
Effectiveness, Snyder 6101. If the
researcher has IRB approval from another institution, copies of the approved
documents from that institution may be submitted for IRB review at Forsyth
Tech.
Researchers must have the support of the Vice-President for the appropriate area (Instructional Services, Student Services, etc.) which may be provided by letter or by their signature on the IRB application.
Researchers should allow one month for an IRB decision. No participants may be recruited and no data collected before the IRB has made a decision on the application. Questions may be directed to the Chair of the IRB, Dr. Dana L. Dalton, at 336.734.7369.
