What do I have to do to get into a Nursing Assistant I class?

  1. Health Education Placement Test
    • Students must first take a placement test (no charge):
      • Testing Locations and Times:
        • West Campus, 1300 Bolton Street in Winston Salem, Wednesday at 9 a.m. and 5:30 pm in Room 18 (Room number subject to change) (336.734.7733)
        • Goodwill on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m.
        • Stokes County Center: Mondays at 10:00 a.m. and the first Wednesday evening of the month at 5:30. 1165 Dodgetown Road, Walnut Cove, Call 336.593.5402 ext. 1117 or ext. 1101 for more information.

          Testing Takes approximately 2 hours.
      • Must bring for test
        • Picture ID and Social Security Card (with matching names)
      • Required scores are
        • Math 6th grade level
        • Reading 10th grade level
    • Note:
      • Students that do not meet the required scores may come to the basic skills lab to work on skills for future testing.
      • Students must retain a copy of test scores for Orientation and class registration. Test results are not kept on file in Health Ed.
      • Exemption: Student who passed FT ACCUPLACER exam in the previous three years with at least 55 on Arithmetic and 80 on Reading OR SAT/ACT scores (contact Health Ed for qualifying scores) in the previous 5 years OR approved college English and/or Math courses (with a grade of “C” or better—must be approved by Health Education Department).
  2. Orientation
    • Students must attend an Orientation Session (no charge):
      • Orientation is approximately four (4) hours. It includes an overview of the Nursing Assistant program and related policies.
      • Orientation is good for one year.
    • Locations:
    • Must bring for Orientation Session
      • Picture ID and Social Security Card (with matching names)
      • Placement Test Results to verify successful completion (or approved equivalent.  Contact the Health Education Department for verification of equivalent scores/classes.  336.734.7733)
      • High School Diploma/GED/High School Transcript OR College Diploma/College Transcript (showing graduation date) (one of these)
  3. Class Registration
    • Registration cannot occur until testing and orientation are successfully completed.
    • Registration cannot occur until students have initiated the Criminal Background Check and Drug Screening.
    • Registration is on a first come first serve basis.
    • Nurse Assistant I classes are
      • 174 hours,
      • conducted year round at 6 different sites
      • offered during the day and in the evenings.
      • Schedules are designed to provide students with a variety of classes that will help him/her attend and be successful.
    • Students may register at West Campus, the Danbury Center, and at the NW Forsyth Center in King
