The Forsyth Tech Student
Oral History Project

In the spring of 2010, in preparation for Forsyth Tech’s 50th anniversary, students in Communication and English classes at the school embarked on a unique project. The students were asked to interview former and present faculty and staff members, as well as former students, about their time here. The audio clips on this page represent the highlights of those many hours of interviews, and comprise a vivid oral history of Forsyth Tech’s first 50 years from the perspective of the people who were there.

Betty Lewis

Betty is a former employee of Forsyth Tech. She worked at the college from 1960 to 1970.


Bill Wilder

Bill attended Forsyth Tech in the mid-1960s and has been an instructor in the Transportation Technologies division since 1968. He is the founder of the Forsyth Tech Race Car Program which became the Richard Childress Race Car Technology program in 2010.


Bill Womack

Bill is a former student of Forsyth Tech. He attended the college from 1968 to 1970 and graduated with a degree in Drafting and Design Engineering Technology.


Cindy Weaver

Cindy graduated in 1978 with a degree in Executive Secretarial Science. She is now the Coordinator for Instructional Planning at Forsyth Tech. 


Dana Triplett

Dana is a former student of Forsyth Tech. He graduated with a degree in Business Computer Programming in 1987.


Debbie Caudill

Debbie first came to Forsyth Tech as a student in 1992. She graduated from the Business Computer Programming curriculum. She is now a Testing Technician in the Placement Testing office in the school’s Admissions department.


Dennis Willis

Dennis is a former student of Forsyth Tech. He graduated with an Associate in Arts degree in 2003. 


Desna Wallin, Ed.D.

Dr. Wallin was the President of Forsyth Tech from 1995 to 2001. She considered it to be a wonderful privilege and opportunity to serve as President for six years. 


Ernie Tomkins

Ernie is a former employee of Forsyth Tech. He worked at the college from 1971 to1981. He began working in the learning lab and then became the director of the Individualized Learning Center. He was also the GED Administrator and the first staff development coordinator of faculty and staff. 


Felisha Hamlet

Felisha earned her GED at Forsyth Tech in 2000 and is currently working towards an Associate Degree in Nursing at the college. 


Harley Affeldt, Ed.D.

Dr. Affeldt was one of the first employees of Forsyth Tech in 1960 and was President of the college from 1971 until 1981.


James A Rousseau II

Jim served as vice president of Community Relations at Forsyth Tech for many years. He endowed The James A. Rousseau II Minority Male Mentoring as his gift to the Foundation.


Jewel Cherry

Jewel is the former faculty member and  Director of the Student Success Center at Forsyth Tech. She is now the Interim Vice President of Student Services.


John Golden

John Golden is a 1981 graduate of Forsyth Tech in the Machining Technology Program. He also worked at the college as Coordinator of the Manufacturing Programs. 


Joyce McAdams

Joyce is a graduate of the Adult High School at Forsyth Tech. She has two degrees from the college, one in Paralegal Technologies and another in Office Systems Technology. She  currently serves as Vice President on Forsyth Tech’s Alumni Association. 


Judie is a 1999 honors graduate of Forsyth Tech in Marketing and Retailing and the winner of the 2003 Distinguished Alumni award. She currently serves as a board member on Forsyth Tech’s Alumni Association.


Kyle Nichols

Kyle earned his Associate in Science degree at Forsyth Tech and went on to attend East Carolina University. He recently graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and is one of the youngest graduates of Forsyth Tech.


Larry Parks

Larry is a former student of Forsyth Tech. He attended the college from 1966 to1968 and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He currently serves as a board member on Forsyth Tech’s Alumni Association.


Marilyn Stowers

Marilyn is a former employee of Forsyth Tech. She joined the school in 1969 and retired in 2000. She was the Coordinator for Pre-Tech, under what was then called “General Studies”. 


Mark Swaim

Mark is a 1979 graduate of Forsyth Tech in Ornamental Horticulture. He currently serves as a board member on Forsyth Tech’s Alumni Association and is a Partner / Sales Manager at American Refreshments & Supplies, LLC . 


Mike Georgoulias

Mike was a student at Forsyth Tech when it opened in 1960 as the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Industrial Education Center.


Nanette Snow

Nanette earned her GED at Forsyth Tech and later earned an Associate’s degree in early Childhood Education at the college.


Scott Tedder

Scott is a former student of Forsyth Tech. He graduated in 1993 with an Associate’s degree in Architectural Technology.


Sherri Bowen

Sherri is a 1988 graduate of Forsyth Tech in the Administrative Office Technology Program. She has been with the college since 1993 and is currently the Executive Assistant to the President of Forsyth Tech, Dr. Gary Green.


Susan Allred, Ed.D.

Susan served in many capacities at Forsyth Tech. She began working at the college in 1981 as the first full-time instructor in the Individualized Learning Center. She then became the Director of the Learning Center, the Dean of College Advancement and eventually the Executive Vice President of Administrative Services. She was also the first female Vice President of Institutional Planning and Support Services at Forsyth Tech in 1990. 


Terry Hairston

Terry is a former student of Forsyth Tech. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in Criminal Justice.


Tommy Williams

Tommy is a former Forsyth Tech instructor. He started in 1963 and taught at the college for 33 years in the Graphics Department. 


Torre Lewis

Torre is currently a student at Forsyth Tech. He started back in 2010 and is working towards a degree in Automotive Systems Technology.
