Student Loan Information (Alternative Loans)

Forsyth Technical Community College does not participate in Federal Loan Programs (FFEL Stafford Loans Subsidized/Unsubsidized, Plus or Direct Loans). However, we do help students complete the private loan process called “Alternative Loans or Private Loans”.

Guidelines for Certifying Alternative Loans:

  • Student must complete a Free Application for Federal Aid “FAFSA” and list Forsyth Technical Community College as one of the colleges to receive a copy.
  • Enrollment and eligibility information will be submitted to the lender once the student has completed the financial aid process.
  • The student will decide which lender best meets his/her needs by researching the financial lending institutions of his/her choice.
  • The office of Student Financial Services will only certify “alternative loans or private loans”.
  • The student must notify the office of Student Financial Services when they have applied for a private loan.
  • The loan amount will not exceed the Cost of Attendance minus Estimated Family Contribution and any other aid awarded by Student Financial Services.
  • The student must be attending Forsyth Tech at least half time (6 or more semester hours per semester).
  • The loan will be disbursed over two terms.

Scholarship Scams

Be careful when searching for information on student financial assistance.  Make sure information and offers are legitimate. Be wary if scholarship offers require a processing fee to apply.

Be cautious and look for these telltale lines:

  • The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.
  • You can't get this information anywhere else.
  • I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship
  • You've been selected by a national foundation to receive a scholarship
  • That you're a finalist in a contest you never entered.

For more information on these scams, visit www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/scholarship.

By listing these other financing options, the Forsyth Technical Community College Office of Student Financial Services is not necessarily endorsing the specific companies or their products and services.  We are merely providing this information to you should you wish to pursue other available financial aid opportunities.  We wish you the best as you pursue your future educational endeavors.
