VA Education Benefits

North Carolina Requirements

  • Admissions Application
  • Official High School/GED/Adult High School transcript
  • Official transcripts from ALL previously attended universities/colleges
  • Formal evaluation of university/college transcript(s)
  • Application for VA Education Benefits (if applying for the 1st time)
  • Copy of DD-214 (Member 4, if available) (if applying for the 1st time)
  • VA Change of Program/Place of Training Application (if you have previously used VA Education Benefits at another school)
  • Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) (if you are in the Active Reserves/NC National Guard)
  • Contract for Students Receiving VA Education Benefits (Forsyth Tech form required of all students)

Certification of VA Education Benefits

Students must have a completed admissions file before the VA Certifying Official can report enrollment to the VA for payment. Once all components are in place, certification will be sent electronically to the VA for payment. All of Forsyth Tech's curriculum programs of study approved by the State Board of Community Colleges are eligible for benefits administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Federal Benefits for Veterans and Dependents

The Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30)

The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. When applying for the benefit, the following applies:

  • Students must apply and have been accepted into a degree program at Forsyth Tech before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (Continuing Education courses are not covered.)
  • Students must complete "VA Form 22-1990" if this is their initial application or "VA Form 22-1995" if they have previously received VA benefits at another institution.
  • Students must provide our office with a copy of their DD-214 Member 4 discharge papers.
  • Students must provide our office with a copy of:
    1. High school or GED transcript
    2. All college and military transcripts
  • Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty.

Montgomery GI Bill - Post 9/11 New GI Bill (Chapter 33)

“The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the new bill.” Your tuition will be paid based upon the highest in-state tuition charged by an educational institution in the state where the institution is located.

  • Students must apply and be accepted into a degree program at Forsyth Tech before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (Continuing Education courses are not covered.)
  • Students must complete VA Form 22-1990 if this is their initial application. For students who are electing this new MGIB instead of their current MGIB chapter, or for students who have previously received Chapter 33 benefits at another institution, they will need to complete VA Form 22-1995.
  • Students must provide our office with a copy of their DD-214 Member 4 discharge papers.
  • Students must provide our office with a copy of:
    1. High school or GED transcript
    2. All college and military transcripts

The Post-9/11 GI Bill also offers some service members the opportunity to transfer their GI Bill to dependents.

Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA)(Chapter 35)

The Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA) provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or a result of a service related condition.

When applying, the following applies:

  • Students must apply and have been accepted into a degree program at Forsyth Tech before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (Continuing Education courses are not covered.)
  • Students must complete "VA Form 22-5490" if this is their initial application or "VA Form 22-5495" if they have previously received VA benefits at another institution.
  • Students must provide our office with a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Students must provide our office with a copy of:
    1. High school or GED transcript
    2. All college transcripts
  • The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits.

The Montgomery GI Bill—Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)

The Montgomery GI Bill—Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. When applying for the benefit, the following applies:

  • Students must apply and have been accepted into a degree program at Forsyth Tech before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (Continuing Education courses are not covered.)
  • Students must complete "VA Form 22-1990" if this is their initial application or "VA Form 22-1995" if they have previously received VA benefits at another institution.
  • Students must provide our office with a completed DD-Form 22-2384, Notice of Basic eligibility (NOBE).
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of:
    1. High school or GED transcript
    2. All college and military transcripts

The Montgomery GI Bill ( REAP) Chapter 1607

Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) provides educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress. This new program makes certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001 either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits.

  • Students must apply and have been accepted into a degree program at Forsyth Tech before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (Continuing Education courses are not covered.)
  • Students must complete "VA Form 22-1990" if this is their initial application or "VA Form 22-1995" if they have previously received VA benefits at another institution.

New Voc-Rehab/Continuing Voc-Rehab students (Chapter 31)

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) Program is to assist veterans who have disabilities received while serving in the military “prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs.”

North Carolina Benefits for Veterans and Dependents

North Carolina National Guard Tuition Assistance Program (NCNGTAP)

Eligibility: Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be an active member of the North Carolina Army or Air National Guard
  • Remain a member of the National Guard for two years following the end of the academic period for which tuition assistance is provided

North Carolina Veterans' Scholarships

Eligibility: Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Must be children (under age 25 at time of application) of certain deceased or disabled veterans or of veterans who were listed as POW/MIA
  • Veteran's disabilities must have occurred during a period of war
  • Veteran must have been a legal resident of North Carolina at time of entry into service, or child must have been born in North Carolina and resided there continuously.

Application Procedure: For information concerning this scholarship program, students may contact their local Veteran's Affairs Office or the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs, 1315 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1315; 919-733-3851. The Division of Veterans Affairs notifies applicants of approval of benefits.
