On Thursday, April 18, 2019, more than 300 people attended the induction ceremony of 76 student scholars in Forsyth Tech’s Alpha Mu Rho chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, making it the largest class of inductees to date. A report on the economic value of Forsyth Technical Community College to its service area in Forsyth and Stokes counties found that the college’s total impact was $627 million in fiscal 2017-18.
Forsyth Technical Community College President Janet Spriggs sent the college’s 2019 graduates off with a bit of advice for the next phase of their lives.
Janet Spriggs’ first order of business, after becoming the seventh president of Forsyth Technical Community College, was to meet the leaders of the community. This included Sen. Paul Lowe, D-Forsyth, who met Spriggs for lunch at the West End Cafe. Their conversation quickly turned to the large number of students who graduate high school in Forsyth County but do not attend any postsecondary institution. That number, 41% of high school graduates over the past three years, was troubling to them both.
Shereen Abdelfattah emigrated to the United States from Egypt with her family in 2002 because her husband was completing a college degree at the time. They moved to the Triad, North Carolina, area in 2009. Around 2014, she began to notice an influx of Syrian refugees in her community and wanted to support them, knowing they’d be coming from having lived through a war and trying to resettle into a new country. What better way than through food, she thought.
