Associate Degree Nursing - RIBN

Curriculum Description

The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides knowledge, skills, and strategies to integrate safety and quality into nursing care, to practice in a dynamic environment, and to meet individual needs which impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential.

Course work includes and builds upon the domains of healthcare, nursing practice, and the holistic individual. Content emphasizes the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary team providing safe, individualized care while employing evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics.

Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). Employment opportunities are vast within the global health care system and may include positions within acute, chronic, extended, industrial, and community health care facilities.

RIBN is a statewide initiative coordinated by the Foundation for Nursing Excellence that partners community colleges with universities in North Carolina.  RIBN students are dually enrolled in a four-year course of study leading to an associate and baccalaureate degree in nursing.   As part of the Triangle-Triad RIBN collaborative, Forsyth Tech and Winston-Salem State University will enroll their first class of RIBN students in the Fall of 2014.  For information on how to apply, please contact Susan Maloney, MSN, RN by email at smaloney@forsythtech.edu or by phone at (336) 757-3617.

The following represents one way in which the program of study can be completed. Students who aren’t able to follow the recommended curriculum model below should consult their academic advisor to be sure that they take courses in the best order for their success.

Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN)

RIBN is a new option for nursing education that allows students to dually enroll in a community college and university to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Coordinated by the Foundation for Nursing Excellence, RIBN partners college and university nursing programs to provide students with a seamless associate to baccalaureate education. As part of the Triangle-Triad RIBN collaborative, Forsyth Technical Community College and Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) offer an innovative four-year shared curriculum for top academic students.

Why choose RIBN?

RIBN provides students with:

• A BSN that expands career opportunities, as many RN positions in hospitals and other health care settings now require this degree

• A curriculum that includes three years of nursing education and clinical experience to facilitate a smooth transition into the first year of practice

• An affordable and accessible way to earn both an associate and baccalaureate degree in nursing as most tuition is paid at community college tuition rates. Classes at WSSU are paid at distance learning rates, providing additional savings in tuition for students.

• The opportunity for part-time employment as an RN during the fourth year of study after successful completion of the associate degree (ADN) and passing the NCLEX licensing exam

• An on-site RIBN Advisor at Forsyth Tech, as well as dedicated faculty and staff to mentor and guide students throughout the entire course of study

In addition, the BSN degree positions RIBN students to continue their education at the graduate level and further expand their career opportunities.

Course of Study

RIBN is a four-year (11 semester) educational pathway that includes all general education and nursing courses required for a BSN degree. Students must achieve a grade of “C” or better in all required courses to progress to the next semester. During the first three years of study RIBN students complete one online class each semester at WSSU in addition to their onsite classes at Forsyth Tech. All fourth year classes are completed at WSSU either online or at a convenient off-campus location.

The first year of study is devoted to completing English, Math, Science, and other general education courses required to meet associate and baccalaureate degree
requirements. Before beginning nursing courses in the Fall semester of the second year students must also:

• Successfully complete a NC approved Certified Nurse Aide 1 Program that includes theory, lab, and clinical components

• Provide documentation that they are currently credentialed as a Nurse Aide 1 (NA1) with the NC DHSR Nurse Aide Registry

• Provide documentation that they have completed an American Heart Association Health Care Provider class and are currently certified in CPR

• Pass a criminal background check/drug screen (as required by clinical facilities) and other health-related requirements of the Associate in Applied Science in Nursing program at Forsyth Tech

Course requirements for an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) are completed at the end of the Spring semester of the third year. Students are then eligible to take the NCLEX exam to earn licensure as a RN. Students must pass the NCLEX to continue to the fourth year of study. Once licensed, students can work part-time as an RN while completing their final semesters at WSSU. Students are awarded their BSN from WSSU following successful completion of the fourth year Spring semester.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the RIBN program is highly competitive. Applicants must meet minimum admission requirements as determined by Forsyth Tech and WSSU to be eligible to apply. Meeting minimum requirements does not, however, guarantee admission to the RIBN program as eligible applicants are ranked and selected based on specific academic criteria.

Minimum admission requirements for RIBN are:

1. Acceptance at WSSU as a Freshman applicant. Information on applying to WSSU and requirements for Freshman applicants can be found at http://wssu.edu/admissions/admission-requirements/default.aspx

2. A SAT or ACT equivalence score of a minimum of 500 in Critical Reading or Writing and 500 in Math (minimum placement testing scores will also be accepted)

3. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6 from high school or for any college course work.

4. A Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS V)* adjusted individual score that is equal to or greater than 60%.

Please note that Forsyth Technical Community College and WSSU also have traditional two-year and four-year nursing programs respectively. Each of these programs has an application process that is specific to that program and independent of the application process for RIBN. If you wish to apply to either the ADN program at Forsyth Tech or the BSN program at WSSU, please refer to the application instructions and admissions requirements as described on their websites for each of these options.

Eligibility Review

All RIBN applicants must meet with the RIBN Advisor for an eligibility review after receiving their acceptance letter from WSSU. The advisor will give you information about placement testing if you have not met minimum required SAT or ACT scores. If you have not taken the TEAS or if your test has outdated, you will receive information on scheduling your TEAS during your review if all other minimum eligibility requirements for RIBN have been met. It is important that you plan ahead to allow for time to complete your review and TEAS by the RIBN application deadline. To schedule your review, please contact the RIBN Advisor at Forsyth Tech by phone or by email.

TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) Requirement*

The TEAS assesses how well a student is academically prepared for learning nursing-related content. Forsyth Tech will accept TEAS scores (Version 5 only) if taken at another school within the past two years. It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit a copy of these scores to the RIBN Advisor. Listed below are several available resources that may help you in being successful on the TEAS.

• Study manuals are available for review in the following locations at Forsyth Tech: Main Campus library (Ardmore building, Stokes County Office (Danbury), Grady Swisher   Center (Kernersville), and Mazie Woodruff Center (Carver Road, Winston Salem). The manuals cannot be checked out.

• TEAS preparation materials may be purchased through the following website: https://www.atitesting.com/solutions/prenursingschool/teas.aspx.

ACA 085-Improving Study Skills, an eight-week online course offered by Forsyth Tech, may be completed wherever Internet access is available. Additional credit is not given to RIBN applicants who have completed the one credit hour course during the selection process.

A $40.00 test fee is required prior to testing. Upon arrival for your test you will be asked to present a payment receipt and a photo ID. A copy of your score will be given to you after completing the computerized test.

Financial Aid

Students interested in applying for financial aid should begin the process as soon as possible by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. Financial Aid staff is also available at Forsyth Tech to help you get started with the application process and to answer questions about financial aid and scholarships that may be available to you. RIBN students that meet eligibility requirements can apply for Forgivable Education Loans for Service (FELS) for all four years of study. Please visit http://www.cfnc.org/FELS for additional information on FELS.

How to Apply to RIBN

There are several phases of the RIBN admissions process. We encourage you to begin early to ensure that all admission requirements are completed by the
deadline. For Fall 2014 applicants all requirements had to be completed by May 30, 2014.

PHASE I

1. Notify the RIBN Advisor of your intent to apply for RIBN.

2. Complete an application as a Freshman student for WSSU. Enter “undecided” for major. A $50.00 application fee is required. To review admission requirements and to print or submit an application online please visit http://www.wssu.edu/admissions/default.aspx

3. Submit official high school transcripts and transcripts from all colleges that you have attended to WSSU and to Forsyth Tech. If admitted to RIBN a final transcript must also be submitted once you have graduated from high school or completed any Spring semester college courses in which you are currently enrolled.

4. Submit SAT or ACT scores to WSSU and to Forsyth Tech.

PHASE II

After receiving notice of acceptance from WSSU,

1. Complete the RIBN application (available from the RIBN Advisor after proof of acceptance to WSSU has been received).

2. Meet with the RIBN Advisor for your eligibility review (please refer to the previous section titled “Eligibility Review” for more details).

3. Complete placement testing if you have not met RIBN minimum SAT or ACT score requirements.

4. Take the TEAS. You will be given information on how to schedule your test after the RIBN Advisor has confirmed that all other eligibility requirements have been met.

PHASE III

All applicants that have satisfied the minimum admission requirements to be considered for RIBN are ranked according to GPA and TEAS scores. Applicants with the highest ranked scores will be accepted. In the event of a tie, the applicant with the higher Adjusted Individual Science Score on the TEAS will be selected.
