Technical Standards for Associate in General Education

Our program technical standards have been developed to help students understand nonacademic standards, skills, and performance requirements expected of a student in order to complete this particular curriculum.

If an accommodation is necessary to participate in the program, it is imperative to identify a reasonable accommodations to those students who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Reasonableness is determined by Accessibility Resources and the program on a case-by-case basis utilizing the program technical standards. The accommodation needs to be in place prior to the start of the program, or it may delay your ability to start the program. It is the student’s responsibility to contact Accessibility Resources and request accommodations.

Skills Description Specific Examples
Communication
  • Requires the ability to use expressive communication but verbally and nonverbally
  • Must be able to communicate in and comprehend English with sufficient skill to interact with others.
To include but not limited to:

  • Listening, speaking, observing, and empathizing.
Technological Basic computer and word processing skills
  • Able to create a word document.
  • Able to access information on a computer and in Blackboard.
  • Requires the ability to access and comprehend information from textbooks, journals, resource books, and other documents both in print and electronic formats.
Critical Thinking/ Problem Solving
  • Demonstrate ability to remember, understand, apply, analyze, and evaluate information
  • Prioritizing assignments so as to decide which ones to work on first.
  • Analyzing feedback from instructors in order to make changes
Interpersonal Skills
  • Ability to interact with others whether face-to-face or through electronic means with professionalism and respect for persons from diverse backgrounds
  • Respond to instructors and/or other students with respect for their viewpoints whether in a traditional classroom or online.

Meeting these technical standards does not guarantee employment in this field upon graduation. Ability to meet the program’s technical standards does not guarantee a student’s eligibility for any licensure, certification exam, or successful completion of the degree program.
