Carpentry

Carpenters work with wood, building structures, installing fixtures, making repairs and doing tasks that are often detailed and complex. They use a wide variety of hand and power tools, requiring a great deal of focus and a commitment to safety. There is a shortage of qualified carpenters at both state and national levels.

Admission Cycle: Fall semester entry (recommended due to prerequisite)
Maximum Number Admitted Annually: 18-20

Program of Study

Students learn to construct residential structures using standard building materials and hand and power tools. Carpentry skills and a general knowledge of residential construction are taught. Course work includes footing and foundations, framing, trim cabinetry, blueprint reading, residential planning and estimating and other related topics. Students develop skills through hands-on participation. The building industry supports this program.

Careers Available

Carpenters are employed by home construction, roofing, and home renovation and maintenance companies and by lumber companies and home supply stores. Many are self employed, though it is a profession that normally requires a long period of on-the-job training to be considered fully qualified.

Recommended Courses and Skills

Strong math skills.

Ability to work with individuals of all ages, enjoy working outdoors, enjoy working with tools and building things, a problem-solver, organized and detail-oriented, patient and able to focus on one task until it is complete.
