Technical Standards for Horticulture Technology

Our program technical standards have been developed to help students understand nonacademic standards, skills, and performance requirements expected of a student in order to complete this particular curriculum.

If an accommodation is necessary to participate in the program, it is imperative to identify a reasonable accommodations to those students who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Reasonableness is determined by Accessibility Resources and the program on a case-by-case basis utilizing the program technical standards. The accommodation needs to be in place prior to the start of the program, or it may delay your ability to start the program. It is the student’s responsibility to contact Accessibility Resources and request accommodations.

Skills Description Specific Examples
Communication
  • Communicate in the English language with all students, faculty and other employees of the college as well as potential employers and clients both in written form and orally.
  • Interpret & implement instructions that are both given orally and written in the English language.
  • Present information about individual projects, participate in group projects and discussions, read & follow directions, read & discuss construction plans & documents and demonstrate listening skills.
  • Communicate clearly for all aspects of the college including online classes, hybrid classes and labs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in writing in documentation and electronic mail.
Mobility & Motor Skills
  • Maneuver without restrictions in any outdoor or indoor setting.
  • Operate power and powerless tools to complete tasks individually or within a group.
  • Maneuver safely and freely in an outdoor or indoor environment in order to present or distribute information to peers as well as to complete projects individually or within a group.
  • Operate tools to implement projects and assignments.
Physical Strength & Abilities
  • Sit and stand in a field and classroom environment.
  • Travel back and forth in a field and classroom environment to participate in group work.
  • Lift and carry 40 pounds.
  • Stand or remain seated during an entire period of instruction.
  • Travel safely in any weather and environment to work with team members.
  • Complete tasks by following written directions.
Sensory
  • Respond to voice commands in the classroom.
  • Hear voice commands in the field near and around equipment.
  • Access plans and details related to labs and projects.
  • Uses tools necessary for labs and projects.
  • Implement and complete projects with verbal commands.
  • Access blueprints, course objectives, and instructions for all lab and classwork.
  • Complete assignments required with a computer, tool or piece of equipment.
Interpersonal & Emotional
  • Cooperatively work with faculty, students, employers and clients.
  • Participate fully in all assignments, labs and projects.
  • Lead and follow the instructions of peers and faculty.
  • When the situation and environment changes remain calm.
  • Manage all personal and medical conditions.
  • Fully participate in group assignments and projects.
  • Provide assistance to all when asked.
  • Maintain a positive attitude while onsite or in the classroom.
  • Complete tasks that are assigned individually.

Critical Thinking/Problem Solving

  • Access assignments in Blackboard and complete labs using industry specific software.
