Completion of the Beginning Veterinary Assistant Training Course or experience as a veterinary assistant

Occupation Description

Veterinary assistants work primarily in animal hospitals and laboratory animal facilities. They provide food and water to the animals along with observing them for signs of illness or disease. They restrain animals, monitor hospitalized animals, administer medications, obtain blood, urine and fecal samples from the animals and then prepare those samples for laboratory examination. Veterinary assistants also clean and disinfect cages and work areas plus answer phones, communicate with clients and may assist with inventory management.

Entry-Level Salary

North Carolina: $8.00 – $12.00 per hour

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students:

  1. Should obtain the knowledge necessary for an entry-level position at an animal hospital, laboratory animal facility, boarding kennel, or pet shop.
  2. Will have an enhanced understanding of animal care and common animal diseases.
  3. Will be able to handle animals safely.
  4. Will become better informed pet owners.
