Forsyth Tech Community College. A place of promise. President's Message. Dr. Janet N. Spriggs.

Hello Forsyth Tech faculty and staff!

I hope you are all doing well and staying safe. I am looking forward to this weekend and the beautiful weather it promises! This week was an important transitional week for all of us here at Forsyth Tech. As we slowly reopen the campus through Phase I of “Return to Brave New Normal,” I wanted to share a few updates with you.

As you know, we are committed to following precautionary steps to keep us all safe. That includes wearing masks, practicing social distancing and using proper hand washing protocols. Our health officials continue to stress that these three steps are crucial in keeping us safe and protected. There is signage posted around the campus to help remind us how and where to practice social distancing, and how to enter and exit each building so we can remain vigilant as we return to campus.

Next week, on the heels of our incredible Virtual Commencement, we will offer “Drive-In Diploma Pick-Up,” a mini-celebration for graduates with music, swag bags and food trucks for a festive atmosphere, on Tuesday, May 19, and Wednesday, May 20, (we will observe all safety protocols). We also will hold a virtual centralized registration for summer term next week as we work toward kicking off the summer term on May 27.

We are continuing to engage with students each week through Facebook Live. Next week we will be shifting to a new day and time – Thursday, May 21, 2020, at 11 a.m. I appreciate those of you who have been tuning in to answer student questions and engage with each other. Students and their parents are joining us and we are happy to provide as much information as we can.

As summer approaches, some of you may have vacation plans to travel abroad. Out of an abundance of caution, Forsyth Tech is requiring employees who travel to any international location to complete the Travel Form before they depart the country.

Finally, yesterday we were pleased to share greater details with students regarding the CARES Act distribution of funds. We have included that information for you in this message as well. You may have students asking questions. If you or your students need more information about any of our updates related to how we are handling the COVID-19 situation, please check out the Health Alert page on our website.

CARES Act – Our Message to Students

We are thrilled to have received funds from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to distribute to eligible students. The guidelines regarding who can receive the funds were set by the federal government. We are working to get the money to eligible students as quickly as possible and hope to have funds distributed by early June.

Eligible students have been identified based on the following federal guidelines given to us by the Department of Education:

  1. Student was enrolled at Forsyth Tech in Spring Semester 2020 as of March 13, 2020
  2. Student was not enrolled online-only prior to the COVID-19 disruption on March 13, 2020
  3. Student qualifies for Federal Title IV funding by either meeting federal award criteria to file a FAFSA or having filed a FAFSA
  4. Student has experienced some COVID-related disruption

If you meet the federal eligibility requirements you will receive an email soon to your Forsyth Tech email address from BankMobile, our refund system, to notify you that your funds have been processed and are available. Please ensure that your preferences for receiving your funds have been updated with BankMobile. The amount you receive is based on your reported EFC (expected family contribution) for the 2019-2020 academic year as determined by your FAFSA.

If you have needs above and beyond the amount you receive, or if you aren’t eligible for the CARES Act grant and need help with anything, including food, rent, utilities, transportation, childcare, tuition, or books, please contact Forsyth Tech Cares or call 336-734-7195. We want to support you all however we can!

Follow YOUR Path

I wanted to leave you one last thought for the week:

“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Over the past two months, we have accomplished much by bravely making our own path together. I greatly appreciate all of your hard work, commitment and dedication.

Thank you all for being Forsyth Tech strong. Stay safe and stay well! Hope to see you back on campus soon.

Have a great weekend!

Warm Regards,

Janet
