Hello Forsyth Tech students!
I wanted to give you another update as we wrap up the Spring 2020 semester! Who would have believed in March that this is how we would spend the last day of classes? I would like to congratulate you on all you have accomplished these last five weeks! You have overcome challenges, you have helped each other and you have shown me your strength and dedication.
Remember, if you need emergency help, with anything from food to rent, please contact Forsyth Tech Cares or call 336-734-7195. We want to support you however we can!
Virtual Commencement – May 7, 2020, at 5 p.m.
Please join us for our first ever Virtual Commencement next Thursday evening on Forsyth Tech’s YouTube channel! While COVID-19 has changed some things, it hasn’t changed our support for our graduates! We still plan to raise excitement and cheers for these graduates who have forged ahead to arrive at this moment.
If you are graduating and need information, please check out our virtual commencement webpage for more information! The bookstore is still mailing caps and gowns to any graduate who asks so they will have them in time for May 7. We still hope to hold an in-person graduation ceremony later this summer or early fall. As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and its impacts on large group gatherings, we will let you know as soon as we know about in-person graduation. Please keep in touch with us, so we know how to get in touch with you over the summer.
CARES Act Distribution
As you may have heard and I mentioned in my outreach last week, the federal government has approved the national CARES Act to preserve jobs and get the economy growing again. We were grateful to be recipients of some of those funds and are we have an action team working to determine how we can quickly access and distribute those funds to eligible students who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. The CARES Act provides very specific guidance about who we can give these funds to. Forsyth Technical Community College will communicate with you directly regarding disbursement of this money to students. Thank you for your patience as we work to quickly get this plan together!
I included this information last week but wanted to share again for those of you planning for the summer semester.
If you are hoping to take classes with us this summer, please let me encourage you to do so as soon as possible. We plan to start summer classes online on May 27 anticipating that we may still be under some kind of restriction for large gatherings even after the stay-at-home orders end. We hope to resume face-to-face classes and labs as soon as possible. Initially, the classes will be online as we have shifted the in-person labs and other hands-on requirements toward the end of the semester. The end of the summer semester is July 31.
The payment deadline for summer semester classes is Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m. For your convenience, we have also added payment plans for summer semester. This will allow you to pay 50 percent of your owed tuition upfront on or before May 21 and then pay the remainder by June 19 (Note: you must be registered for at least six credit hours to participate in the payment plan).
Please be aware that we will also have what we call drop/add registration where you can make adjustments to your schedule on the first and second day of the semester – May 27 and 28. The payment for classes registered during this time will be at 7 p.m. on May 28 and the payment plan will be available for those classes as well.
Re-Entry & Return to Campus Planning
With the stay-at-home order extended to May 8, we are planning what our process will be for re-entry on Main Campus and throughout the off-campus centers. The team has completed a draft of their plan which will be announced next week. I want to assure you that we want to be safe while allowing us to begin to return to some sense of normalcy. It will not be overnight, but it will be a phased approach. As the team develops plans and we know more, we will share information with you.
Facebook Live – Tuesday, May 5, 2020
I have enjoyed talking with you in the Facebook Live sessions. I hope you will be able to join me for another Facebook Live for you at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2020. We are also looking at adding an additional time to accommodate other students. I look forward to talking with you and answering your questions!
I wanted to leave you one last thought as we wrap up Spring 2020 together.
“If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it you can become it.”
— William Arthur Ward.
I believe that each of you can go as far as you want to go. You have proven yourselves each day through this pandemic. For graduates, I hope you will be tuning in and chatting next Thursday, May 7, at 5 p.m. We wish you the best! For continuing students, we hope you will watch commencement and look forward to seeing you this summer or in the fall.
Thank you for all for being Forsyth Tech strong. Stay safe and stay well!
