Forsyth Tech Transportation Technology Student Places Second in National Competition

Forsyth Technical Community College Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology student Daniel Hanna won second place in the American Trucking Associations’ 2016 Technology & Maintenance Council’s (TMC) National Student Technician Competition, TMC FutureTech 2016, held in Raleigh, NC, recently. This is the second year in a row that Forsyth Tech has participated in this competition. Hanna took first place in 2015.

In addition to placing second in the overall competition, Hanna was the station winner in several individual skill competitions, which included Service Information, Coolants & Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Torque and Drive Belts.

Hanna competed against four other students from Forsyth Tech and 43 other competitors from tech schools around the country including Utah Valley University (UT), WyoTech (WY), and Francis Tuttle Technical Center (OK). All five Forsyth Tech students placed in the top 18 of 48 entrants. This is the third year of the FutureTech competition and is part of an industry-wide initiative to attract a new generation of technicians to the field.

“We are so proud of Daniel and all of our students who entered this competition,” said Allen Doub, Forsyth Tech’s program coordinator for Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology. “They competed among the best students in the country.

“Competitions like these offer great opportunities for our students to not only demonstrate their skills but to network with trucking company representatives looking to hire the best technical talent available. In fact, Salem Leasing, WheelTime Company and TravelCenters of America made private presentations to our students, including first-year students who attended to support their colleagues, to introduce them to their companies and discuss future employment opportunities. All three of these companies have a need for many qualified technicians.”
