Italian for Travelers

Are you planning a trip abroad? The Italian for Travelers course is designed as both an introduction to the Italian language and as a help to those whose only interest is being able to get around in Italy on formal or simple, self-guided tours. The 8-week course will cover Italian pronunciation, use of verbs in the present tense that are useful for visiting major sites, an introduction to Italian history and culture, and the connection between Italy and countries in the New World with special emphasis on the impact of Italians on U.S. history and culture. Frank Ancona, the instructor is a second-generation Italian. He has worked in Italy, and his grandparents are from Sicily.

Testimonial:

The following  is an unsolicited response from a couple who recently returned from Italy. It reflects the impact taking the Italian for Travelers class had on their experience:

Annamarie and I just got back from our trip to Italy on Wednesday and I wanted to tell you what a wonderful time we had and how much your class helped me. I obviously couldn’t carry on conversations in Italian but I knew enough to pick out words and interpret the gist of the conversation. I had a couple of occasions where I ran into someone who spoke no English and I had to understand what they were saying. What I learned in your class helped tremendously.  Thank you, Mark Jones

Italian: Culinary Language

We are surrounded by Italian food. Pizza, pasta, and parmigiana are all words we are familiar with, and all words that come from Italy. We are also intrigued by cooking shows on the Food Network. Wouldn’t it be interesting to combine both learning more about Italian food and its preparation while at the same time learning to speak basic Italian? This course combines the two. While this is NOT a cooking course, it will be centered around learning basic Italian as we learn the preparation of simple Italian dishes, the kitchen, and the tools and utensils used.

Prerequisite: Italian for Travelers or permission from the program coordinator.
