On Saturday, March 30, 2019, two students and a staff member at Forsyth Tech took home three of the six awards at the North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association Conference (NC4CSGA) held March 29-31 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham, N.C.
Mallory Calfee, president of the Forsyth Tech Student Government Association received the Daryl Mitchell Western Region award for outstanding student. This award is given in his honor to a student who demonstrates the leadership qualities upon which the organization is founded. The students honored with this award demonstrate the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Those honored use the six pillars of character to serve their community and local community college.
Selena Jimenez, Student Government vice president and Forsyth Early College Student received the Dr. Michael Taylor Award. This award is given to a student whose work has enhanced the growth of others in their organization, increased teamwork and personal involvement, while helping the organization reach its potential. This student demonstrates the embodiment of servant-leadership and exemplifies a desire to lead by serving others in their community, on their campus, or in the community college system.
Beverly Lewis, director of Student Life and Engagement received the award for Advisor of the Year.
Lewis consistently demonstrates a commitment to students’ leadership growth through the Student Government Association. She takes a personal interest in students, helping them develop their full potential in and outside the classroom. Students often credit her with believing in them, which in turn motivates them to achieve their goals.
“We are very proud of Mallory and Selena,” said President of Forsyth Tech, Janet Spriggs. “They excel as students and as leaders, inspiring countless students by encouraging both academic excellence and extracurricular involvement.” Spriggs also acknowledged the leadership of Ms. Lewis saying, “Beverly is passionate about the work she does and is committed to helping students achieve excellence. Ms. Lewis and the entire Student Life and Engagement team that she leads, are dedicated to student development, helping students learn and grow both inside and outside the classroom, and always pushing students to learn more, dream more, do more and become more.”
