> Build My Network
- LinkedIn is the world’s largest online networking tool. Create a profile and start making connections today! You can also search for and apply to jobs.
- Organizations/associations at the local, state, regional and national level often offer discounts for student membership and conference attendance. This can be a great way to learn more about what you want to do and an opportunity to meet and talk to people in the field.
- Consider going to events within your local community. Search places like Eventbrite that have events which align with your interests. You will probably learn something new and meet new people, too!
- Networking is important because it’s often how many people get jobs. You may be thinking that the people you already know well, your friends and family, will be the people who help you get to your next job. While that my be true, it is more often “weak ties” who help us get where we are going. Weak ties are people who know us but do not know us as well as our family and close friends.
- Sometimes the thought of networking can be scary. Let’s think about it this way: networking is you getting to know more people than you know now. You’ll get to know people you don’t know (yet!) through having conversations with them about things you already know, and things you are probably studying right now.
- It’s a learning opportunity. Learning is fun! Think of talking to new people as the chance to learn something you didn’t already know. Sometimes this will give you new ideas and maybe even a chance at new opportunities.
- Keep track of the people you meet! Consider using an Excel spreadsheet or something where you can store names, contact information, company/organization, position title, and notes that will help you follow-up with these new connections.
