R.I.S.E. stands for Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence. Students are placed into classes based on their unweighted high school GPA. Prospective high school students who score at least a 2.4 unweighted GPA may register for college-level math and English courses. Prospective students who score below a 2.4 unweighted GPA will register for their college-level math and English courses with an additional support course. The RISE placement test is an option for students who want to try to place out of the support courses for math and English.
Learn MoreC.L.E.P. stands for College Level Examination Program. The CLEP offers prospective students the opportunity to earn college credit for skills they have mastered. This credit is transferrable to nearly 3,000 colleges and universities.
Learn MoreAnother way that prospective students can receive credit for skills they have already acquired is by requesting to take a proficiency exam. It is important to note that credit awarded by proficiency exams will count toward any degrees earned at Forsyth Tech, but the credit will not transfer to another college or university. If you need the credit to transfer, please consider taking the CLEP exam instead. Your advisor can help you to decide which option best fits your needs.

Learn MoreCASAS is an acronym for Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS). CCR primarily
utilizes the CASAS Student Test of English Progress and Success (STEPS) series with ESL students for
placement testing as well as to determine measurable skills gains. Students are tested in both Reading
and Listening during an initial testing session and are tested in both subjects after accumulating at least
50 classroom hours. When students reach a level 6 or higher in CASAS STEPS testing, they are tested
using TABE CLAS-E
TABE is the acronym for Test of Adult Basic Education. College and Career Readiness uses TABE
11/12 testing primarily in reading and math to determine initial class placements of Adult Basic
Education, High School Equivalency and Adult High School (ABE/HSE/AHS) students as well as to
determine whether students have made Measurable Skills Gains (MSGs) during their courses of
study. Students are re-tested after earning 40 classroom hours to determine if an MSG has
been attained. A limited amount of TABE testing is also used for upper-level English as a Second
Language (ESL) students. These students are tested in reading and listening. Generally, ESL
students are post tested after a minimum of 50 hours of instruction using the TABE Complete
Language Assessment System – English (TABE CLAS-E). Because CCR uses TABE tests to assess a
student’s initial skill level and their academic growth over time, there are no passing or failing
scores
Some Economic Workforce Development (EWD) programs require minimum scores on TABE
9/10 reading, math or language test(s) before students are allowed into the programs. T
