Notary Public Course

Certain legal documents, such as property deeds, wills and business agreements, require the impartial signature of a Notary Public. A Notary Public screens signers of important legal documents, confirming identities, and more.

This 8 hour course prepares students to become a commissioned/appointed Notary Public.

If you are at least 18 years old, have a High School diploma or GED and can satisfactorily complete this workshop, you can apply for your Notary Public Commission. If you have ever been convicted of a felony you must contact the NC Secretary of State Office to determine your eligibility.  This class will teach you what you need to know before applying for your Notary Public Commission. The Notary Public Guidebook 2016 edition is required and available in the Forsyth Tech bookstore. This manual must be purchased and available on the first day of class

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to start of class in order to allow time for check-in!

  • Attorneys do not have to take this course, but must submit an application for NC Notary Public Commission at sosnc.gov/divisions/notary.
  • If you are re-certifying and your current notary commission has not lapsed, you do not need to take a class to complete your recertification.
  • For expiring NC Notary Public Commissions before lapsing, you can complete an online exam and submit a Reappointment Application form.
  • For NC Notary Public commissions that have expired, you may be directed to repeat the course. Contact the NC Secretary of State office for confirmation.

Attention Students Taking Online Classes:

You must have a valid (current) state or federal government issued photo ID, the required book, as well as a web camera, speakers, and microphone on your computer OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to take part in the ONLINE course. Google Chrome is the preferred browser.

  • Only ONE Student per computer
  • Student must have a Computer with a webcam, microphone, internet connection, and Google Chrome web browser (Smartphones, tablets, and Chromebook will not work).
  • Quiet place to actively participate in the online class (without interruption)
  • Student must provide a live video connection through the whole class and participate via chat, video, and verbal responses.
  • Must have access to a printer for handouts and the Notary Application

You WILL NOT be allowed to take the online class if you have not completed ALL assignments.  Additionally, you WILL NOT be admitted to class late.   

Additional instructions will be emailed 1 week prior to class which will explain assignments that must be completed BEFORE the FIRST day of class.

Electronic Notary Course

eNotary=Paperless Transactions – Electronic notarization is the process of applying an electronic notary signature and seal onto an electronic document in a completely electronic and paperless transaction.

This 4-hour online synchronous (live) course prepares a valid commissioned notary public in the state of North Carolina to become a commissioned/appointed eNotary Public. Personal appearances by the principal are still required in electronic notarization.

This class will teach you what you need to know before applying for your eNotary Public Commission.  You must hold a valid commission as a notary public in the state of North Carolina in order to take this class.  The Electronic Notarization Manual is required and is included in the cost of the classYou will receive instructions on how to download this manual approximately one week prior to class.  This manual must be downloaded and available on the FIRST day of class. Please arrive in class at least 15 minutes prior to the start of class in order to allow time for check-in!
