Why Go To Community College?
It’s all about opportunity, affordability, and flexibility
By Dr. Janet Spriggs, President, Forsyth Technical Community College
I started my educational journey in a community college, and have spent my career supporting them because I have seen, time and time again, how they change lives. At Forsyth Tech, I meet students every day who are building a future for themselves and their families. Some are just starting out and some are starting over. But all of them have one thing in coming: they are all moving forward.
So, why do people go to community college? The answer is simple. They come for opportunity, flexibility and affordability. They come to take the next step, whether that leads straight to a career or on to a four-year degree. And they come to Forsyth Tech because they know they will be supported along the way
Why Do People Go to Community College?
1. Opportunity
Community colleges open doors. We welcome people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences. At Forsyth Tech, come as you are. One of our promises to you is that you’ll be welcomed, supported and encouraged every step of the way.
I think of a student who came to us after years in the workforce. She had supported one of her children through college, and was unsure at first. It had been a long time since she sat in a classroom. With support and hard work, she completed her program and now works at a major tech company in the community, with strong pay and purpose. That opportunity was always there. She just needed a place that would help her unlock it.
2. Flexibility
Life is busy. Many of our students are working, raising families, or both. Community colleges are built with that in mind.
At Forsyth Tech, we offer classes during the day, in the evening, and online. Some programs allow students to move at their own pace. Others combine hands-on learning with flexible schedules.
One student I met worked full-time while taking evening classes. It was not easy. Still, the schedule made it possible. Step by step, she earned her credential without putting her life on hold.
3. Affordability
Another reason why community colleges are good is cost. Community college is more affordable than a four-year school, even for in-state tuition.
At Forsyth Tech, tuition is among the lowest in the state. Many of our students receive financial aid, scholarships, or short-term training support. For some, this means little to no out-of-pocket cost.
I think of a student who wanted to avoid student loan debt. He took advantage of a Learn and Earn Apprenticeship Program (LEAP), and got paid to gain hands-on skills for his job, all while also earning his credential. He saved thousands of dollars and still reached his goal.
4. Pathway to a Bachelor’s Degree
Community college can be the start of something bigger. Many students earn an associate degree and go straight into the workforce. Others choose to continue their education.
Starting at Forsyth Tech can make a bachelor’s degree more affordable. Students complete their first two years here, then transfer.
One student began with us, unsure of her long-term plan. Over time, she found her path. She transferred to a university and is now working toward her bachelor’s degree. Her journey started with just one class.
5. Support
Support matters. Many students need more than just classes. They need guidance, resources, and people who believe in them.
At Forsyth Tech, programs like Forsyth Tech Cares and the Student Parent Advocacy Resource Center (SPARC), along with advising, tutoring, and student support services. These programs exist because we know life can be complex.
I remember a student who was in their last semester of classes when they encountered a string of bad luck. Their car broke down, making it impossible for them to get to work, which meant they would get behind on rent and other basic necessities. Thanks to generous community support, the Forsyth Tech Cares Navigators were able to help the student get their car repaired so they could get their life back on track and avoid the domino effect of a “life happens” moment derailing their entire future. With support from our team, he stayed on track. He graduated. Today, he is working and giving back to his community.
What to Think About Before You Enroll
Choosing a college is an important step. Take time to think about your goals, your needs, and what will help you succeed.
Think about your end goal. Are you looking for a job, a promotion, or a transfer to a four-year school? Your plan will help guide your program choice and your timeline.
Look into financial aid, scholarships, and payment plans. Many students are surprised by how affordable community college can be once they explore their options.
Consider your commute. Think about distance to one of our nine campuses, time, and cost. If needed, explore online or hybrid options that reduce travel.
Be honest about how much time you can give to your studies. Even one or two classes can move you forward.
Make sure the program matches your goals. Talk with advisors, career coaches and other support staff. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – or for help. This is your path.
Think about the help you may need along the way. Strong support can make a real difference in your success.
There is no one path forward. That is what makes community college so powerful. It meets you where you are and helps you take the next step.
If you are asking yourself why people go to community college, the answer is this: they are looking for a chance. For some students, it’s a chance to learn, for others, it may be a chance to grow. For all of us, it’s a chance to build something better.
At Forsyth Tech, a promise made is a promise kept. And we’re ready when you are.
