What you’ll learn
This course will help you gain the knowledge and skills needed to become a certified Community Health Worker (CHW) in North Carolina. CHWs work in many places like hospitals, health departments, clinics, and community or faith-based organizations.
You’ll learn about nine key skills that every CHW needs, including:
- Talking and listening effectively (communication)
- Helping people build skills and confidence (capacity building)
- Connecting people to services (service coordination)
- Working well with others (interpersonal skills)
- Speaking up for others (advocacy)
- Reaching out to the community (outreach)
- Growing personally and professionally
You’ll also learn about health problems that affect many people, like diabetes, asthma, and cancer, as well as social challenges like safety, emergency preparedness, social isolation, and childhood trauma (ACEs).
Finally, you’ll explore how healthcare is changing in North Carolina and how to help clients find support through tools like NCCARE360.
Outcomes
Upon completion of this training students will be eligible for listing as a NC Certified Community Health Worker.
