Nursing Assistant II Hybrid Program

The student must first contact the Health Education Department to receive clearance to enroll in the Nursing Assistant II course.

Once the student has been cleared to pursue enrollment, a link to a Compliance Tracking System will be provided. The student will then set up an account and provide the documentation required by Forsyth Tech and it’s participating clinical facilities.

Students will be required to complete a background check and drug screening in addition to providing documentation for the following immunizations and vaccinations:

1. Tdap/Td– Total of 1 vaccination within the last 10 years
2. MMR– Total of 2 vaccinations -OR- Lab report showing a positive blood titer for measles, mumps and rubella
3. Varicella– Total of 2 vaccinations -OR- Lab report showing a positive blood titer for Varicella (chicken pox)
4. Tuberculin (TB) Test– Negative results of 2 TB skin tests within the last 12 months (must be administered at least 7 days apart)
   • –OR– Negative results of 1 serum blood test (Quantiferon, T. Spot (IGRA) within the last 12 months
   • –OR– Negative chest x-ray within the past 5 years for students who have a history of positive skin tests with written evaluation by healthcare provider for signs and symptoms within the last 12 months if x-ray is over 1 year old

5. Influenza– Annual seasonal influenza vaccination required in mid-fall and winter.
6. Hepatitis B-Total of 3 vaccinations -OR- Lab report showing positive blood titer -OR- a signed Hepatitis B Waiver
7. COVID Vaccine– Moderna or Pfizer vaccine total of 2 doses and booster -OR- Johnson/Johnson vaccine 1 dose plus booster

The student must provide a copy of:

• Current CPR Card
• Current Nursing Assistant I Registry
• Driver’s License and Social Security Card (SS number covered)

The Nursing Assistant II performs nursing skills approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and under the supervision of licensed nurses. Emphasis is placed on infection control, including sterile technique. Tasks that may be delegated to the NA II by the licensed nurse include: sterile technique, wound Irrigation and care, suctioning, tracheostomy care, IV fluid assistive activities, ostomy care, urinary catheter insertion and removal, and tube feedings.

Nursing Assistant II’s (NA IIs) are employed in Hospitals, Long Term Care Facilities, Rehabilitation Centers, Clinics, Hospices, Psychiatric Centers, and Home Care. There is a need for NA IIs, especially in hospitals.

Earnings for NA IIs vary depending on experience, shift and length of service. Entry level pay may begin at $12.00 for the new NA II, but range from $14.00-$20.00 with experience and location.

The 160 hour NA II program includes nursing skills taught in accordance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Classroom, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences are included. Skills include oxygen therapy, suctioning, sterile dressing changes, IV fluid assistive activities, ostomy care, gastrostomy/nasogastric feedings, and urinary catheterizations. Safety, infection control, and sterile procedures are emphasized. Upon successful course completion, the student is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide II by the NC Board of Nursing.

Nursing Assistant II candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and successfully complete a placement test with reading at a 10th grade level and math at a 6th grade level.

Candidates must be certified as NA1s and be listed on the NC Department of Health Service Regulation Nurse Aide Registry with no substantiated findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property.

Upon successful completion of the NA II program, graduates must register with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Human resource skills are essential for work in health care. Such skills include professionalism, teamwork, customer services, and communication skills. They also need to be organized and self-starters. Safety is key and all precautions must be taken to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.

All Nurse Aide II Initial Listing applications must be submitted within 30 business days following completion of a Nurse Aide II program. If your application is not submitted within 30 business days, you will be required to retake the full Nurse Aide II program.

A Nurse Aide II listing is non-transferable (to or from North Carolina).

Healthcare facilities that provide clinical experiences for Forsyth Technical Community College programs require criminal background checks and drug screenings. The healthcare facility holds the right to deny a student admission into their facility based upon the information presented in the initial background check and drug screening process.

In an event of a class cancellation, all efforts will be made to enroll the student in the next available class of their choice.
