This year, Forsyth Tech participated in the RiverRun International Film Festival panel discussion, Animation on Screen: A Conversation on Contemporary Animation and Digital Effects, held Saturday, April 18 at Aperture Cinema in downtown Winston-Salem. The conversation brought together educators and industry professionals to explore the craftsmanship, innovation and emerging technologies shaping contemporary animation and digital effects.

Nelson Ricardo, Forsyth Tech Animation & Media Arts instructor presenting at the RiverRun International Film Festival

Representing Forsyth Tech was Nelson Ricardo, instructor in the college’s Animation & Media Arts program, formerly known as Digital Effects & Animation Technology. Ricardo joined fellow panelists in discussing how students are being trained for the evolving demands of the animation filmmaking industry, including the growing importance of technical adaptability, storytelling and creative collaboration.

The panel explored a wide range of topics, including emerging animation tools, digital production techniques and the expanding career opportunities available in film, gaming, motion graphics, virtual production and visual effects. Attendees gained valuable insight into how animation programs are preparing students to succeed in an increasingly competitive and technology-driven creative landscape.

In addition to the panel discussion, student artwork from Forsyth Tech’s Animation & Media Arts program was featured throughout the RiverRun Film Festival at the Hanesbrands Theatre. The exhibit highlighted the creativity, artistic vision and technical skill of Forsyth Tech students while showcasing their work alongside that of regional peers and fellow emerging artists.

The display offered festival attendees an opportunity to experience the innovative work being produced by the next generation of animators and digital artists. From character designs and concept art to digital environments and animation projects, the exhibit reflected the diverse talents and creative voices developing within Forsyth Tech’s program.
