Forsyth Tech Selected for National Program Supporting Student Parents
Forsyth Tech News
Forsyth Tech has been chosen as one of only five colleges in the nation to take part in the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning’s Academy Model for Parent Learners, a program that helps colleges better serve students who are also raising children. The selection gives Forsyth Tech access to national expertise, professional development and new resources as it works to create a more supportive, family-friendly college experience. It also builds on Forsyth Tech’s 2Gen initiative with the North Carolina Community College System, which focuses on supporting student parents and their families.
For 50 years, the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, known as CAEL, has helped adult learners turn their knowledge and skills into better jobs and economic mobility. Its Adult Learner Academy brings colleges together to share what works and gives them expert guidance on serving adult students more effectively. Forsyth Tech joins the academy with much of that groundwork already done. By listening to student parents, identifying the barriers they face and developing strategies to address them, the college has built a strong foundation. Now, it has the chance to turn those strategies into lasting change across campus.
Over the coming year, Forsyth Tech’s participation will unfold in four parts. The college will begin with an institutional assessment, using CAEL’s Adult Learner 360 tool to review its current practices and identify areas for improvement. In spring 2027, CAEL representatives will visit campus to see the college’s work firsthand, meet with faculty and staff, and provide technical assistance. Forsyth Tech will also form a parent learner community of practice to strengthen collaboration and share effective strategies across the college. Finally, in November 2027, Forsyth Tech will present its progress and lessons learned at CAEL’s national conference in Pittsburgh.
“This is bigger than one grant or one initiative,” said Shanta Reddick, Director of Forsyth Tech Cares & Adult Learner Success. “It is about creating an institutional culture where student parents are seen, heard, valued and supported as they work toward their educational and career goals.”
The recognition reflects Forsyth Tech’s ongoing commitment to student parents, who often balance classes with work and caring for their families. By strengthening support for these students, the college aims to help more parents complete their education, advance their careers and build a better future for their children.
