CASAS is an acronym for Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS). CCR primarily utilizes the CASAS Student Test of English Progress and Success (STEPS) series with ESL students for placement testing as well as to determine measurable skills gains. Students are tested in both Reading and Listening during an initial testing session and are tested in both subjects after accumulating at least 50 classroom hours. When students reach a level 6 or higher in CASAS STEPS testing, they are tested using TABE CLAS-E.
For information on the English as a Second Language program, click hereCCR uses the CASAS Reading Goals series for some ABE students. These students follow the same post
testing protocol as other ABE/HSE students testing at the completion of 40 classroom hours
Common Questions about CASAS CCR
The majority of CCR CASAS testing is completed in the West Campus Testing Center in Room 8, however,
testing is also conducted on Main Campus at the Robert L Strickland Center, the Mazie Woodruff Center,
the Grady P. Swisher Center, and Mineral Springs Elementary School.
Initial appointments for CASAS STEPS testing are set up by new ESL students via the online link for the
ESL Registration/Placement testing sessions. New dates are added as they are determined and, once
the allotted slots are filled, a waiting list link is added to the web page. The link for sign up for
Registration/Placement Testing sessions or to be added to the waiting list can be found here.

Scheduling for retesting in CASAS Reading Goals is completed in one of three ways: students schedule
themselves via the online link through Element 451 that is sent to them by CCR staff; CCR staff members
telephone students with the testing information; or CCR coordinators work with testing staff to schedule
entire classes for testing. Students will be informed of post testing procedures by their CCR instructors
or by CCR staff.
How should I prepare for CASAS STEPS and Reading Goals testing?
There are no practice tests available for CASAS testing in STEPS or Reading Goals, however, students can
access sample questions at the CASAS website.
BLET CASAS Reading Goals
The Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program uses the CASAS Reading Goals 907/908D for
placement into its program. Most of this testing is completed through the Winston Salem Police
Department, but occasionally West Campus testing will administer a test for a BLET candidate. Students
must score at a 10th grade proficiency level to enter the program.

Scheduling is flexible but generally these placement tests are administered on Wednesdays on
West Campus at 10 am, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. To schedule a test, call 336-734-7831 or email
nard@forsythtech.edu.

There are no practice tests available for CASAS Reading Goals, however, students can access sample
questions at the CASAS website.
