When Hugo Hernandez enrolled in Forsyth Tech’s Architectural Technology program in 2018, he was not a traditional college student. He was a husband, father of two and full-time employee determined to create a brighter future for his family.

“My greatest motivation was my family,” Hugo says. “I wanted to have the resources to pay for their tuition when they were ready to go to college.” That determination has taken him farther than he ever imagined. Hugo graduated from Forsyth Tech in 2020 with an Associate in Applied Science in Architectural Technology. Drawn to architecture because it combines creativity, science and technology, he knew he had found the right career path. “I wanted to practice a career where art, science, technology and fun all apply,” he says.

“I wanted to design healthier living spaces that could improve people’s lives.”

At Forsyth Tech, Hugo found the flexibility and support he needed to balance work, family and school. “I received all the support I needed to succeed in the program,” he says. “My instructors supported me academically, personally and professionally.” Todd Shoaf, Forsyth Tech’s Architectural Technology Program Coordinator, remembers Hugo as an exceptional student. “Hugo was an outstanding student in many ways,” says Shoaf. “His accomplishments are testimony to his talent, hard work and commitment to success. We are still showcasing samples of his work to students in classes today.”

After graduating, Hugo transferred to Appalachian State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Building Sciences with a concentration in Architectural Technology and Design. The journey required daily commutes from Winston-Salem to Boone while continuing to work full time and care for his family, but Hugo says every sacrifice was worthwhile. During his time at Appalachian State, Hugo completed an internship with STITCH Design Shop, an award-winning Winston-Salem architecture firm known for its innovative residential and commercial projects. His internship led to a full-time position, providing valuable professional experience while he completed his bachelor’s degree.

Hugo’s achievements also earned him recognition as Forsyth County’s first American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Talent Spotlight recipient, honoring his talent, educational achievement and contributions to workforce development through a partnership between Forsyth Tech, Greater Winston-Salem Inc., The Arts Council and the Center for Creative Economy.

Today, Hugo is continuing to reach new milestones. He is currently in his first year of the Master of Architecture program at UNC Charlotte. This spring, his final design studio project was selected as the top project among all students in his master’s cohort—a remarkable accomplishment that reflects both his talent and years of dedication.

Looking back, Hugo credits Forsyth Tech with helping launch a journey that continues to open new doors. His story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to pursue a dream. Through determination, hard work, and the support of family, faculty and employer partners, Hugo has built a career and a future.
