This course is designed to provide individuals with the required knowledge, tools, and resources to become recognized as a certified Community Health Worker (CHW) in North Carolina working in a variety of healthcare and community settings (Health Departments, Hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Clinics, Faith-based Organizations, etc.). Instruction is designed to cover the nine core competencies essential to working as a certified CHW which include communication, capacity building, service coordination, interpersonal, advocacy, outreach, personal/professional skills. The knowledge base competencies will cover health and social issues that disproportionately impact clients including but not limited to chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, and cancer. Some of the social issues covered will include safety, emergency preparedness, social isolation, and adverse childhood experiences (ACES). This course is designed to prepare an individual for employment as a medical unit secretary in either a hospital or a skilled nursing center.
The class includes 120-130 hours of classroom training and 50-100 hours of clinical experience at a local hospital. Course content includes medical and drug terminology, receptionist and telephone duties, hospital procedures, and a HRD component covering communication skills, team work and customer service.

Medical Office I will prepare students for an entry-level job in a doctor’s office or clinic. It does not prepare students to be a professional coder. In the first half of the course, students receive an introduction to medical terminology. This training equips students with the skills to draw blood specimens from patients for testing and analysis. A phlebotomist’s responsibilities include maintaining blood collection equipment, communicating effectively with patients, selecting venipuncture sites, handling blood specimens with care, entering test data into the computer, and performing clerical tasks related to record-keeping. The course includes both theoretical instruction and hands-on clinical experience, which takes place in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and central processing areas
Telemetry Cardiovascular Technician

This course is designed to prepare the student to become a Certified EKG (ECG) and Telemetry Technician and to gain employment. The course will cover the anatomy and physiology of the heart as it relates to cardiac rhythm interpretations, principles of EKG, rhythm recognition of sinus, atrial, junctional, ventricular, pacemaker, and heart block rhythms. Skills will include operating EKG equipment, printing and mounting cardiac rhythm strips, as well as interpreting over 30 cardiac rhythms produced from 12 and 6 lead telemetry monitors. A 24-hour clinical component is included.

The Dorothy L. Lougee, Nursing Assistant II hybrid course integrates online instructions, In person lab work, and clinical practice. The online component of the class is through Blackboard, a virtual learning environment, offering students guided study through the various course modules, while ensuring participation through assigned readings, weekly assignments, as well as discussion board postings. Typically, students are given a week to submit assignments online, with periodic commentary and discussion board postings to be included by the instructor(s) and other students. This course is ideal for students who are proficient in the use of technology, independent in their work processes, and are in need of a flexible classroom schedule.
