TABE is the acronym for Test of Adult Basic Education. College and Career Readiness uses TABE 11/12 testing primarily in reading and math to determine initial class placements of Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency and Adult High School (ABE/HSE/AHS) students as well as to determine whether students have made Measurable Skills Gains (MSGs) during their courses of study.
Students are re-tested after earning 40 classroom hours to determine if an MSG has been attained. A limited amount of TABE testing is also used for upper-level English as a Second Language (ESL) students. These students are tested in reading and listening. Generally, ESL students are post tested after a minimum of 50 hours of instruction using the TABE Complete Language Assessment System – English (TABE CLAS-E). Because CCR uses TABE tests to assess a student’s initial skill level and their academic growth over time, there are no passing or failing scores.

The majority of CCR TABE testing is completed in the West Campus Testing Center in Room 8,
however, testing is also conducted on Main Campus at the Robert L Strickland Center, the
Mazie Woodruff Center, the Grady P. Swisher Center, the Stokes Center, and Goodwill of
Northwest North Carolina on University Parkway in Winston Salem.
There is no study guide or practice test for TABE 11/12 tests.
However, sample questions are available hereABE/HSE/ESL Students schedule themselves for initial placement testing via an Element 451 link
that is sent to students after they attend a CCR Orientation session.
Scheduling for retesting is completed in one of three ways: students schedule themselves via
the online link through Element 451 that is sent to them by CCR staff; CCR staff members
telephone students with the testing information; or CCR coordinators work with testing staff to
schedule entire classes for testing. Students will be informed of post testing procedures by their
CCR instructors or by CCR staff.
