North Carolina’s identification requirements

Minors at least 16 years old can take the HiSET battery of tests. They must meet the same identification requirements as adults. Minors must also complete the appropriate minor paperwork before scheduling a test. The Minor Release Form  should be completed appropriately, notarized, and taken to the West Campus Testing Center. For instructions on turning in the form, call 336-734-7831 or email nard@forsythtech.edu.

Students completing computer-based testing will get an unofficial score on the day of testing, except for the writing score. The Language Arts in Writing scores can take about a week. Students completing paper-based tests generally receive their scores within two weeks. HiSET posts all scores in the HiSET portal.

The minimum passing score on each multiple-choice subtest is 8 out of 20 points. In addition to the multiple-choice portion, the Language Arts in Writing test has an essay component that requires at least 2 out of 6 points. HiSET requires a cumulative total of at least 45 points across the five tests and a minimum of 2 on the essay to award the HSE Diploma. This means that a student can’t earn their HSE Diploma if they only score 8 on each of the subtests. For more information on HiSET scoring requirements, click here
